Why you need a privacy policy on your blog and how to get one

why your blog needs a privacy policy

When you first start blogging there are many things you have to learn about from how to write great posts, to design tricks, to social media scheduling.

You probably never even considered reading up on rules and laws about blogging? Or that there might be legal mistakes you’re making on your blog without even realising?

If you haven’t already set up a privacy policy on your blog, it’s important that you put one in place ASAP to ensure that you’re complying with the law.

Here’s some information about why your blog needs a privacy policy and how to set one up…

What is a privacy policy?

A privacy policy is a statement that explains what kind of information your website or blog collects about your visitors and what you do with that information.

All websites have a legal requirement to protect the privacy of their customers, clients, and readers by declaring how they use their information and confirming that they keep it private.

This information includes the visitor’s name, email, location or address, blog comments, phone number, IP address, etc.

Do I really need one?

Yes!

If you collect any personal information about the people who visit your blog then you must have a privacy policy in place. This includes collecting email addresses for a newsletter or any third party plugins that might collect data from your website visitors.

Even if you don’t think you collect personal data you probably are – usernames and emails in comments left on your blog count as personal data for example.

It’s vital that you have a privacy policy in place so you don’t land yourself in trouble.

How do I set up a privacy policy?

If you don’t have a privacy policy in place on your blog and aren’t sure where to start, don’t panic it’s really easy!

Do your research and find a legally prepared privacy policy that will cover you for all personal data that you collect through your blog.

You can easily find free privacy policy templates by doing a quick Google search but as with anything free you can’t be sure that it will include everything that is required by law.

It’s worth paying for a template so you have peace of mind that you won’t be sued.

Feel free to look at the privacy policies of other bloggers so you know what should and shouldn’t be included, but remember theirs might not meet all the legal requirements in the first place so it’s best not to just copy and paste someone else’s policy.

Choosing a privacy policy that also has terms & conditions included explains what people can or cannot do with your content and photos, covering you should anyone else try to use your content and ideas without your permission.

Where do I link to my privacy policy?

Once you’ve produced a privacy policy and a set of terms and conditions you need to make sure that they are displayed on your blog.

Add these somewhere prominent where they can be easily found, rather than hidden behind other links or pages.

The best place to add a link to these policies is within the footer of your blog so that the link appears on every page.

So now you know what a privacy policy is, why you need one, and where to get one, you should be covered if anyone questions what you are doing with their data!

Did you already have a privacy policy in place before reading this post? If not, we hope this article has explained why they are so important for bloggers.
