What are backlinks?
A backlink (or inbound link) is a link that comes from another website to yours. This could be a text link within an article or it could be a link placed behind an image.
Why do you need backlinks?
Backlinks are an important part of SEO as search engines such as Google regard these highly when ranking websites in the search results. Backlinks to your blog from high-quality websites will help your site to rank higher in the search engine results and also increase your site’s domain authority.
How to get backlinks to your blog
Getting backlinks to your blog can be easier said than done, but since it is such an important factor in SEO it’s important to work on getting inbound links from high-quality websites. Here are 5 ways to earn backlinks…
#1 Join blogger roundups
Round-up posts are popular with bloggers as they are easy to write and often generate a lot of traffic. By round-ups we mean posts like those ‘Top 10’ lists that feature a blogger’s favourite products or places to visit.
If you join Facebook groups for bloggers you will find people asking for tips, products or places that they can include in a round-up post. If they feature your blog they will include a link back. As well as improving your SEO with new backlinks you may also find that some new readers are sent your way.
A couple of good Facebook groups for round-ups are:
You might also spot that some of your favourite bloggers publish weekly or monthly round-ups that are relevant to your blog posts. Try reaching out to them via email or on social media to see if they would be interested in including one of your links in their next post. Maybe you could also offer to do the same in return?
#2 Claim unlinked mentions
If you see that a company or another blogger has mentioned your website online but have not included a link back to your blog, you can send them a polite email asking that they update the post to include a backlink. After all, if they have liked your content enough to mention it then it’s a good idea to include a link so their readers can find out more.
You can set up Google Alerts for your blog or brand so you receive an email whenever you are mentioned on another site. This way you can check for any new mentions and backlinks and make contact quickly.
#3 Reach out to bloggers, brands and journalists
If you feel that you’ve written an amazing blog post why not reach out to a brand or company you have included in the post. They might love the post too and include a backlink on their website or in one of their own blog posts.
You could also reach out to journalists within your niche and tell them about a post you’ve written. They may be able to use some of your information or words in a future article and include a backlink to your website.
Other bloggers might also be interested in sharing your post or using some of the ideas or tips themselves in return for a backlink. Don’t be afraid of a little self-promotion!
#4 Guest post
You may have noticed that many bloggers will guest post on another blog within their niche. Doing this brings the benefit of more exposure for you as a blogger and is also a good opportunity to create backlinks to your blog.
To start guest blogging you can reach out to bloggers in your niche and pitch an idea of a blog post to them. Many bloggers will appreciate having some free extra content for their site and will gladly include a link back.
You can also search Twitter to find new opportunities using keywords such as ‘guest blogger’ or ‘guest post’ as many bloggers will ask for guest blogs when they are short of content or going away on holiday.
#5 The broken link-building method
This is where you use a tool such as the Chrome Check My Links extension to find broken links on a website. You can then send the webmaster a friendly email notifying them of the broken link and suggest a page or post on your blog that they could include instead.
Of course, you can only do this with websites relevant to your niche but it is a great idea if you have a lot of list posts or guides.
To find relevant websites search Google for keyword + links, or keyword + resources.
For example, if you are a travel blogger you might search for travel + links to find relevant websites.
