5 mistakes to avoid when posting to social media

Social media is a must for bloggers – you need to get your content out there so that as many people as possible can see it. As well as your blog posts, you’ll also be sharing photos of your life, news stories that interest you and chatting with like-minded people.
With all this social sharing, it can be a battle to get your posts out as quickly as possible, however, it’s important to take care with your posts to make sure you don’t make any embarrassing mistakes that could damage your brand or lose followers. If you want to make money from your blog, you will want to attract the attention of PR companies and businesses that want to work with you, so you need to share great content.
When using social media for your blog, think quality not quantity!
We’ve blogged before with things bloggers need to know about Twitter, but this time we are sharing general tips for avoiding mistakes when posting to all social media networks.

#1 Spelling and grammar mistakes
Check, check and check again! Proofread all your posts for spelling and grammar mistakes – if you make these in your social media posts it will put people off from clicking through to read your blog posts.
Some spelling and grammar mistakes will just be a bit embarrassing, but others could mean that the post is confusing or doesn’t actually make sense.
If you’re shortening a post to fit within the character limit on Twitter, make sure it still reads ok if you have abbreviated words.
We use the Grammarly browser extension which checks your spelling and grammar on social media posts as well as blogs and emails, so is definitely worth installing to give you that extra helping hand.
#2 Posting incorrect links
Before you hit the publish button, just double check that you’ve included the correct link for the post. Click on it before posting so you can be sure that it goes through to the correct blog posts or news article.
When you have multiple browsers open, copying the wrong link is easily done!
#3 Incorrect information
If you’ve used a statistic or a fact in your social media post, just do a quick Google search before posting so you can be confident that the information is right before you share it with the world.
There will always be a smartypants waiting to comment on your post to point out any mistakes so it’s always best to do your best not to make any!

#4 Scheduling posts at the wrong time
It’s easy to accidentally schedule a post for AM rather than PM, or vice versa, and waste a good social media posts because your audience aren’t online to see it. To avoid this, check that you’ve scheduled your posts for the right time of day.
If you’re using a #MondayMotivation or #FridayFeeling hashtag, it’s always worth checking that you have actually scheduled your post for the correct day of the week!
#5 Not checking properly
It can be so easy to miss spelling mistakes or wrong links, even if you’ve checked your posts several times before you hit publish. It’s happened to the best of us!
It’s always worth having another read once the post is live to check it again. If you catch the errors quickly enough you might be able to edit or delete the post before too many people see it.
