Beautiful and professional photography is a must if you’re trying to build a successful blog. Low-quality images on your site is one of the blogging fails that will send people running for the hills never to return!
To ensure your website or blog is well designed and gives off that all important first impression you can either use high-quality stock images or learn how to take amazing photos of your own.
Taking your own photos is always the best option as this allows you to make your blog look unique and share some of your own personality and style with your readers.
If you’ve taken your own photos and are now looking for a way to enhance them to make them look professional, there are thousands of free photo editing apps out there. It’s often all down to personal preference, but here are our favourite 5 free photo editing apps you can install on your phone now…

Adobe Photoshop Express
As this is an official Adobe photo editing app you can be sure that it’s full of great filters and effects.
Adobe Photoshop Express features lots of instant filters called ‘Looks’, as well as tools to adjust or correct your photos manually. You can save customised Looks which is great if you have your own style or theme across your blog and social media channels.
You can add text and effects to your images, resize them, correct red-eye, add watermarks and lots more.
This app is easy to use and has definitely replaced any mobile photo editing app that we’ve used previously.
Pixlr
This app is really easy to use, probably the most user-friendly photo editing app we’ve used before. Pixlr has all the tools needed to edit your photos manually, as well as a long list of preset filters and overlays.
You can add frames and text to your photos, and we love the ‘pixelate’ brush which is great if you have people in your photos who’s faces you don’t want to show.
When you’re done you can share directly to social media or just save to your phone for later.

Canva
If you blog then you have no doubt used Canva before for blog or social media graphics. Whilst it is mainly for graphic design tasks, you can also edit your photos using the app.
This is ideal if you are editing a photo specifically to use on Instagram or Facebook as you can select the correct size as well as altering the photo.
You can choose from various templates or start a blank template. Simply add an image from the gallery on your phone, add a filter and any text and you are done.
Any photos or graphics created on the app will be available on the desktop version when you next log in.
PicMonkey
You might have used PicMonkey online before, but the good news is that even if you don’t subscribe you can still use the app for free. There are some features which you will need to subscribe for, but the main ones are all included in the free version.
It has all the usual tools, including a long list of effects. You can also add text, filters and graphics to your images
A great tool is the ‘cutout’ tool. You can either manually cut out the background, let the app automatically do it for you or use one of the shape cut outs.
The PicMonkey app has a few tools and filters that we haven’t found on some of the other apps and it is really easy to use.
You can share your photos on social media or save to Google Drive, Dropbox etc.
Snapseed
This is quite an advanced photo editing app, probably one for the more experienced photo editors out there.
As well as all the usual preset filters Snapseed also allows you to create and save your own filters from scratch. It includes the tools you’d expect such as cropping, text, frames as well as a few you might not expect.
You can edit the depth of field which is when you make the background blurry and the foreground in focus. You can also use the “Selective Adjust” tool to select an area of your photo and adjust the saturation, contrast, and brightness of just that part.
Another great tool is the ‘Perspective’ feature which allow you to change the angle of the photo.
Snapseed also lets you save your edit history so you can amend your images in the future if needed – very handy if you’re editing on the go.

I use Canva a lot for Instagram stories and have recently been using VSCO
I downloaded VSCO the other day but it wanted me to pay!
I do all my blogging etc on my stationary pc. I use Canva but have also used Photoshop some years ago. 🙂
