10 ways to get more Instagram engagement
July 29, 2019
Are you an Instagram addict? Or do you have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it?
Instagram is notorious for changing the algorithm regularly and upsetting its users – the latest rumoured change is that the number of likes will soon be phased out on posts which hasn’t been good news for Instagram influencers.
If you struggle with growth and engagement on Instagram then you’re not alone, it’s a complaint we hear from many bloggers. Mainly because as soon as you get a strategy in place, the algorithm changes and what once worked no longer does.
Some tricks are common to getting more engagement on all social media platforms though, and there are ways to encourage your followers to engage with your content.
Here are 10 things to try to get more comments and engagement on your Instagram posts…
1. Ask a question
As with all social media channels, asking your followers a question is a great way to get more engagement on your posts. Use the caption to ask a question relevant to the photo. Make the question easy to answer as people tend to want to leave short replies.
2. Host a giveaway
Competitions and giveaways are perfect for ramping up engagement. Post a photo of the prize and ask followers to leave a comment in order to enter the giveaway. You can also ask them to tag any friends who they think might also like to enter.
The longer your competition is open for the longer people have to comment, so try a giveaway of the month and direct people on your blog or other social channels to enter via Instagram.
3. Use hashtags
You get 30 hashtags on Instagram and we’d recommend using as many of these as possible as long as you keep them relevant. Using a hashtag will cause your post to appear when users search for that hashtag or click on the hashtag on another post.
You can also follow your favourite hashtags on Instagram, so by using popular ones, more people will see your post giving you more opportunity to receive comments. Do your hashtag research first or use a tool to help you find the best ones for your content.
4. Post a video
Instagram allows video clips of up to 1 minute as well as images, but most users still stick to posting photos.
Videos tend to receive more engagement across social media channels, after all, if someone has enjoyed your video enough to stop scrolling to watch it then they’re more likely to leave a comment.
5. Post at the right time of day
There’s not much point in posting a great photo in the middle of the night if most of your followers are asleep. If you have a business profile you can check the Insights tab to see when most of your followers are online. Using these times you will get your photos in front of more people.
If you don’t have a business profile, think about when you’re audience are most likely to be online. If they work it’s probably going to be early morning or evening when they have a chance to scroll through Instagram. Try a few different times for a week or so to see what time of day brings the most engagement.
6. Make your account public
If your account is set to private your content is only going to be seen by the people that follow you, even if you use hashtags. Many people won’t request to follow a private account as they can’t see what kind of content is being posted, so set your account to public and you will see more people following you and engaging with your posts.
7. Post consistently
The more photos and videos your followers see from you, the more they will feel like they ‘know’ you and want to engage with your content. Posting every day will ramp up your engagement, but if you don’t have enough content for that try at least 3 times per week.

8. Post selfies
There’s no denying people love selfies! Photos of faces get a lot more engagement than other types of posts on most social media platforms.
Try photos of yourself, family, friends, with your pets, and see if these posts do get more engagement than your other content.
9. Comment on other posts
Spend some time each day commenting on posts of the people you follow on Instagram – after all, if you want engagement on your content it’s only fair to do the same for others.
Many users will return the favour and who knows you might even make some new Instafriends!
10. Respond to comments
Always reply to any comments that you do receive. It’s polite and will encourage your followers to leave more comments in the future.
